Grenada, how beautiful you are

I finally arrived in Granada, a city that called me since I first set foot in Andalusia.

Granada has become the student capital of Spain. Everyone wants to go, from teenagers in high school to university students and even graduate students.

Those who do not have the excuse of living in Granada for a season due to their studies, choose to visit this city, both in winter and summer, as it is one of the most varied cities in Spain in terms of landscape, offering everything from ski resorts in the Sierra Nevada, to beautiful beaches found in the South.

Granada has been generally known as a cheap, accessible city, but as more and more people are coming to visit it, from national to international tourists, its prices are progressively increasing as it is happening in most of Andalusia.

Granada, qué linda eres

Finalmente llegué a Granada, una ciudad que me llamó desde que pisé Andalucía por primera vez.

Granada se ha convertido en la capital estudiantil de España. Todos quieren ir, desde adolescentes que están en la escuela secundaria hasta universitarios e incluso estudiantes de posgrado.

Quienes no tienen la excusa de vivir en Granada por una temporada debido a sus estudios, eligen a esta ciudad para visitarla, tanto en invierno como en verano, pues se trata de una de las ciudades más variadas de España en cuanto a paisaje, ya que ofrece desde centros de ski en Sierra Nevada, hasta playas hermosas que se encuentran en el Sur.

Lo que sí, Granada ha sido una ciudad generalmente conocida como económica, accesible, pero como cada vez hay más y más gente que se acerca a ella para visitarla, desde turistas nacionales a internacionales, sus precios están aumentando progresivamente como está pasando en la mayor parte de Andalucía.

I was only in Granada for one day, and the truth is that I spent my whole trip walking. It was worth every step, as I got to know the city better.

When I got off the bus that took me from Malaga to Granada, although the first thing I wanted to do was to see the Alhambra, I chose to follow my intuition and move where I felt it.

I walked through some narrow streets among which I discovered a very small one full of quite original messages, mostly of Andalusian nature. You can tell that in the future it will be a wall where thousands of people will leave something written. It is only in its beginnings.

I followed some people who were somehow heading “somewhere” with a lot of determination, and I found a whole Arab sector where they were selling many elements representing that culture. I remembered Israel for a moment.

Sólo estuve un día en Granada, y la verdad es que me pasé todo mi viaje caminando. Lo valió cada paso, pues así conocí mejor a la ciudad.

Al bajar del bus que me llevó de Málaga a Granada, aunque lo primero que quería hacer era ver la Alhambra, opté por seguir a mi intuición y moverme por donde iba sintiéndolo.

Recorrí unas estrechas calles entre las que descubrí una muy pequeña repleta de mensajes bastante originales, en su mayoría de naturaleza andaluza. Se nota que a futuro será un muro en donde miles de personas dejarán algo escrito. Sólo está en sus inicios.

Seguí a algunas personas que de alguna manera se dirigían a “algún lugar” con mucha determinación, y me encontré con todo un sector árabe en donde vendían muchísimos elementos representantes de esa cultura. Recordé a Israel por un momento.

So, venturing through the city, I arrived at the viewpoint of San Nicolas, a place from where you can see the famous Alhambra. As you can see, you can also see impeccable landscapes of what characterizes this Andalusian city: its greenery and mountains.

Right there was the church of San Nicolas. Unfortunately you had to pay to enter, so I preferred not to do it, because in the end I was going to be there for 5 minutes.

I took a few more pictures and passed by the Mosque right there, and headed to the Alhambra, which was my first destination originally in Granada.

I walked for about 30 minutes and started walking up the path of this beautiful creation, which is almost selected as one of the wonders of the world.

There I did want to pay to get in, but I will tell you that if you want to visit it, you will have to get your ticket well in advance, because it was noon and the tickets were sold out.

Así, aventurándome por la ciudad, llegué al mirador de San Nicolás, un sitio desde donde se puede ver la famosa Alhambra. Como pueden ver, además se ven unos paisajes impecables de lo que caracteriza a esta ciudad Andaluza: su verde y sus montañas.

Allí mismo estaba la iglesia de San Nicolás. Lamentablemente había que pagar para ingresar, por lo que preferí no hacerlo, pues al final iba a estar allí 5 minutos.

Tomé unas fotos más y pase por la Mezquita que se encuentra allí mismo, y me dirigí a La Alhambra, que era mi primer destino originalmente en Granada.

Caminé alrededor de 30 minutos y empecé a subir por el sendero de esta preciosa creación, que casi queda seleccionada como una de las maravillas del mundo.

Allí sí que quería pagar para entrar, pero desde ya les digo que si quieren visitarla, deberán sacar su entrada con bastante anticipación, pues era el mediodía y las entradas estaban agotadas.

The Alhambra also offers free access spaces, so you can also enjoy them. I was absolutely amazed with its gardens, which surrounded the entire structure.

After there, I approached the city, where I passed by the Cathedral and sat down to eat something, since I had been walking for several hours without sitting or eating, and this little body was asking for food.

I found a city center collapsed with people, they were obviously students who were perhaps on their lunch break, maybe at a get-together. Their relaxed appearance, their laughter, some of them looking to stand out were exponents of their condition (if you will and in the best of senses), of students.

Igualmente La Alhambra ofrece espacios de acceso gratuito, por lo que también pueden disfrutarlos. Yo quedé absolutamente sorprendida con sus jardines, que rodeaban toda esta estructura.

Luego de allí, me acerqué a la ciudad, en donde pasé por la Catedral y me senté a comer algo, ya que llevaba varias horas caminando sin sentarme ni alimentarme, y este cuerpito pedía comida.

Me encontré con un casco urbano colapsado de gente, eran evidentemente estudiantes que estaban quizás en su hora de almuerzo, tal vez en una juntada. Su aspecto relajado, sus risas, algunas y algunos que buscaban destacar eran exponentes de su condición (si se quiere y en el mejor de los sentidos), de estudiantes.

Granada enchants, invites to calm, disconnects. It is a city that must be known without a doubt. I took my time to go because it was close, but if you are suddenly on a trip to Malaga and you are hesitating whether or not to visit Granada, I tell you what you have to do in that list of places to visit, is to put Granada in second place. The first? For Seville.

Granada enamora, invita a la calma, desconecta. Es una ciudad que debe conocerse sin lugar a dudas. Yo me tomé mi tiempo para ir porque estaba cerca, pero si de pronto estás en un viaje a Málaga y estás dudando de si visitar o no Granada, te comento lo que tienes que hacer en esa lista de lugares a visitar, es colocar Granada en segundo lugar. ¿El primero? Para Sevilla.
